The Snowflake Myth: Out Today!

Leadership Coach, Award Winning Generations Speaker Alex Atherton

It’s been a long haul but now the wait is over!

The Snowflake Myth is out today on Sunday 28th September. This is what you need to know.

(Note: this week’s newsletter is not all about the book - please scroll down for the rest 😁)

●       If you have bought the ebook (thank you!) please download it today!! The timing of a download makes a big difference to Amazon rankings.

●       The 99p ebook deal is still live today. Ebook pre-orders and sales are really important in terms of the book getting enough traction to find its way to an ACTUAL bookshop.

●       Clicking on the ebook link above also makes a difference even if you have bought it already! See below - it got to number 6 in the ‘Business Management and Leadership’ chart on the basis of interest alone. Can you help it go to number one?

●       The link to the paperback is here. If you don’t want to buy from Amazon other options are available including from publisher Troubador.

●       Go to my website for details of the free chapter. Details of where it can be bought will be updated after release day. I will eventually sell on my website again (but the second print run needs to be completed first!)

Most importantly though - I appreciate all your support. If you have bought it already, thank you so much! I hope you enjoy it - please let me know what you think.

It really helps the book if you leave a review with Amazon. This will be possible from release day onwards. Reviews gain more prominence when they are for the version you bought.

The specific review links are not yet available at the time of writing but if you go to the paperback link or ebook link they should now be live.

Remember that

● The book’s subtitle is ‘Explaining Gen Z in the workplace and beyond’. The main audience is for managers, leaders, HR/L&D specialists trying to recruit and retain Gen Z and then develop them further.

● As I have found through my work as a generations speaker and Gen Z speaker there is a lot of interest amongst parents of sons and daughters in their twenties as they seek to understand their perspectives and career decisions.  The issues from the multigenerational workplace are also relevant to family life.

Multi-generational workplace issues in the news this week

1. Over half of Gen Z wants to quit their job

It might be a story from the USA but this article from Newsweek backs up figures which have been around for a long time.

It is high for other generations too, at least a quarter across the board.

Important lesson though - just because the jobs aren’t out there does not mean your workforce is engaged or will stay when the job market improves.

2. Gen Z ‘hiring nightmare is real’

The issues faced by Gen Z in finding work are not just about AI - as explained in Fortune this week.

I am not convinced that the ‘no fire no hire’ world is ‘uniquely American’ although economically the USA has its own issues.

One recent example I heard first hand stands out. Nurses who started their degrees in 2022 are now working in hospitality or retail because jobs are not available. Three years ago as Covid-19 was still a high profile issue that would have been hard to believe.

Employers seeking to recruit are in a strong position right now - how many will use it well?

3. Gen Z agonises over how to act and what to say

Interesting piece in The Guardian. And of course it’s not everyone.

But social media has taught Gen Z that the most subtle change of expression or words can make a vast difference in how a post performs. Taking that to the world of work can bring a lot of stress and anxiety with it.

There’s also a lesson for their employers - you need to be seen to care about how you act and what you say. The succinct job advert, policy, email can make a big difference. It’s not necessarily about ‘getting it right’ but being seen to try.

How can I help you?

1. Talks, workshops and seminars - I am an award-winning speaker. My talks include recruiting and retaining Gen Z, understanding Gen Z, overcoming the challenges of the multigenerational workplace plus those relevant to the topics below. Speaker showreel here.

2. One to one coaching programmes for senior leaders who are swamped by their jobs so they can thrive in life. Click here to discover where you are on your journey from Frantic to Fulfilled? Just 5 minutes of your time and you will receive a full personalised report with guidance on your next steps.

3. Team coaching programmes - working IN a team is not the same as working AS a team and yet they are often treated as if they are the same. I help teams move from the former to the latter, and generate huge shifts in productivity and outcomes.
